By Boris de Souza, on Sunday, 12 August 2007

1. What you need:

a. CBU username and password (usually username and password of your email)

b. A computer on CBU campus with access to the World Wide Web

c. Microsoft Word installed on the computer

d. Make a new folder to save the files in.

2. Design the website:

a. Open Microsoft Word.

b. Click View at the top then click Web View.  This will allow you to view the page just like a website.

c. Click Insert at the top and choose what you would like to insert first, like a text box, a picture, an object, or a diagram, and if you want to create another linked page, click hyperlink.

d. To create a link to another page, insert a Hyperlink, click Create New Document, type in a new name, and create a new, different webpage in the new document and follow the same steps starting at Step 2.

e. Rearrange each object to the place you desire, change settings of each object.

f. Play and learn with Microsoft Word.

3. Saving as HTML:

a. When finished designing your website, click File then Save As…

b. Browse for the folder that was just created at the beginning of the tutorial.

c. Type in ‘index’ as the File name.

d. In Save as type, click the box then click Web Page.

e. If you wish, change the Title by clicking the Title… button.

f. Finally, click Save.  This will generate a folder and a file after clicking Save.  The file is named index and the folder is named index_files.  Remember, this should be saved in the folder created earlier.

4. Uploading your website to the Internet:

a. After designing the website, open Internet Explorer.

b. At the Address bar, type ftp.cbu.edu

c. If a login window comes up, continue to next step.  If it did not, check if internet is working or try again later.

d. Without @cbu.edu, type in your CBU User name and password accordingly and hit Enter.

e. If the login window does not appear again, continue to next step.  If the login window reappears, try again.  After several failed attempts at logging in, consult with the Information Technology Services (ITS) to retrieve or reset your password.  Then, try again with the new password.

f. In the window, you should see a WWW folder.  Double-click the WWW folder.

g. Copy the folder index_files and file index.

5. Accessing the website:

a. After placing your files into the WWW folder, people can now access your website.

b. In order for someone to view your website, open any internet browser window (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox), type into the address bar stu.cbu.edu/~username replacing username with your CBU username.

c. Viola!  Your webpage should appear after the browser is finished loading.
